We live in a society that opposes aging, despite the evidence that each of us is, in fact, aging. This anti-aging bias has prevented us from thinking about old age in a way that feels good or that will create a good elderhood. If you have parents or grand parents in a nursing home this is a must read. There is an alternative to the medical model, thank God!
Good conclusion supported by long arguement:
As I read through Thomas' book, I was struck by two things. First that he has offered a new way of looking at the human life span by creating new 'ages' that describe our lives far better than simply childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. I applaud this introduction. The second aspect that struck me was the enormous amount of support he included in the book. "Youth accustoms us to running ever faster and jumping ever higher, and the prospect of change in the opposite direction fills us with a cold dread." We are unprepared for the things age presents. This book opened my eyes to misconceptions I've had about 'old people' and what's good for them. If you have aging parents or will become the aging parent I highly recommend this book. At what age do you plan on giving up control of your life to someone else? I don't plan on it. But at some point the privilege could be taken from you by your 'well meaning' children. Read this book. Talk to your kids. Talk to your parents and grandparents. No one should be stripped of the dignity of living a life long loved... more info
