Nearly 16 million Americans suffer from osteoarthritis, a disease that causes the breakdown of cartilage in joints, most commonly of the hip and knee. This book highlights the substantial advances in medical science made over the last 20 years in the treatment of hip and knee problems, many of which are not well known to potential patients. ARTHRITIS OF THE HIP & KNEE helps patients understand the value of becoming actively involved in the decision-making process surrounding their treatment by covering: *causes, treatment, options, and disease progression; *advice on living with osteoarthritis; *preoperative therapy; *surgery: cost and benefits, options, procedures, and improved techniques; *postoperative therapy and advice on living with an implant; *the future of joint replacement; and *interviews with hip and knee patients. ARTHRITIS OF THE HIP & KNEE is the collaborative effort of three people, each contributing a unique insight into the treatment of osteoarthritis and the rehabilitation process. Ron Allen-the patient-had one of his hips replaced at the age of 40, and the other at the age of 45. David Stulberg-the orthopedic surgeon-performed Ron's operation. Physiatrist Victoria Brander supervised Ron's rehabilitation following his second surgery.

Very usefull for people who need to know about those subjects. Easy to understand! It did help me a lot!
Thank God for the authors and this book!:
I was given this book by one of its authors (Dr. Stulberg) as part of the pre-op regimen. I was 45 when my hip was replaced by Dr. Stulberg. I was back to work in about 6 weeks and still feel great today, 5 years later, praise God; (I even cycle/commute over 20 miles)...while some ortho docs didn't offer me any hope of regaining my 100% of normal; only a lot of limitations, S. D. Stulberg gave me hope; the Lord gave me healing! I credit this book with giving me the knowledge I needed to face this... more info
Excellent Book:
I bought this book prior to hip surgery. It saw me all the way through the process, and I'm now doing the recommended exercises. I've had a super fast recovery, and credit the book so much that I purchased two more for my hippy friends.
alternative to hip replacement surgery:
I was looking for a book to guide me in postponing or avoiding hip replacement surgery. The title "The Active Person's Guide to Taking Charge" prompted me to buy this book, but I was disappointed in the book because so little of it was devoted to really taking charge of your physical situation so that you can strengthen your hip and achieve its maximum flexability. A better choice for those wishing to do everything in their power to avoid or postone surgery would be Dr. Klapper's book, "Heal Your Hips",... more info
