Using a clear, conversational, and friendly approach, the Second Edition of README FIRST for a User's Guide to Qualitative Methods offers novice researchers a readable, practical "readme" guide to get them started in qualitative inquiry. In chapters full of practical advice, authors Lyn Richards and Janice M. Morse take the reader through the steps of research design, software choice and use, data making, coding, abstracting, and presenting a study. New to the Second Edition:
Offers qualitative software overviews and advice: Students are introduced to qualitative software tools, provided with Web sources for updated information on all packages, advised on what software packages fit what needs, and guided to tutorials for practice work.
Incorporates changes in software: A new version of NVivo software has been released and this edition has been updated to reflect the changes in the software.
Includes new sections on writing: Since novice researchers often dread "writing up," new sections have been added on preparing for writing, using software well, writing thesis or dissertation, and writing for publication.
Extends methodological congruence: More detailed accounts of the integrity of qualitative methods are included.
Emphasizes methodological choice: A "map" of methods is provided, with clear tables explaining how and why different questions, sorts of data, approaches to analysis and outcomes are associated with different methods.
Intended Audience: This core textbook is designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate students taking their first qualitative research methods courses across the social sciences, as well as in Health & Nursing, Business & Management, Education, and Politics.

One of the best!:
This is one of the best qualitative textbook that I've ever read. (And I read extensively.) It's easy to read. The writing style is concise and unpretensious. Unlike other bulky research method textbooks, it contains less than 300 pages. I use it as a portable book on the go. The title may lead people to think that it is for beginners who haven't undertaken their studies. At one point, this holds true.
