Carlos Montezuma, M.D.: A Yavapai American Hero--The Life and Times of an American Indian, 1866-1923
Impeccably researched and rich in detail, Carlos Montezuma, M.D. documents the life of one of the first Native American medical doctors. Taken from his family as a boy by Pima Indian warriors and sold to an itinerant Italian photographer, Montezuma found himself deposited into vastly foreign surroundings at a very young age. In late nineteenth-century Chicago, he was presented with opportunities, both educational and social, that had previously been unavailable to his people. Leon Speroff paints a full and well-rounded picture of the life and times of this remarkable man.

History every American citizen should know:
This passionately written book relates the story of an amazing man whose life existed in two cultures: one Americans label as native/indigenous, the other as cultured/civilized. The circumstances of Montezuma's life placed him in a position few had at that time to help bridge the gap. The rich and well researched detail in this book gives the reader insite into a time and subject in American history about which we all ought to be more informed. The love story that unfolds, the great old photographs, maps,... more info

Montezuma was kidnapped as a young child from his Yavapai parents by Apache warriors and sold to an Italian photographer traveling through the desert... more info
