A highly visual directory of Web sites, this book has readable descriptions and at least one screen shot of every site listed. The sites are the "best of the best" presented in a format that gives more mass market appeal than the "telephone book" style directory.

The Que development group has gathered its picks for the seven top Web sites in each of 101 popular topics and presented them in a visual, easy-to-skim format. Each of the 101 two-page spreads showcases a topic, arranged alphabetically from alternative medicine to yoga. The Que team showcases its favorite site for the topic in each spread, plus six others it deems the cream of the crop. Selected sites feature a write-up along with a black-and-white screen shot of the site, although the number-one pick gets a lengthier description. Topics cover a broad range of interests, including all major sports; business topics such as banking, insurance, investing, and legal; entertainment-oriented topics such as books, celebrities, movies, and science fiction; science and technology-oriented topics such as software and space; hobbies such as cigars, guns, and photography. This book is a wonderful idea for those seeking new Web sites to explore. It's hard to flip through the pages without having several intriguing sites catch your eye--no matter what your area of interest is.

Out of date:

Good guide for 1997, but 3 years later it is out of date and does not contain many new sites. Web directorys should be updated yearly at the least.

Irrespective of contents, physical properties cheaply done:

I was very unhappy when I saw the cheap quality of The Big Basics Web Directory published by Que.. The paper is the kind used for coloring books, and the printing is poorly done. In some instances it is all but impossible to read the black print on dark gray background. I had expected to receive a book of at least as good quality as Que's Complete Idiot's Guide to Windows 95. Sorry about this poor review. This is the first time in a long time I've been so disappointed in a book I had ordered sight unseen.

     There are literally millions of Websites online today that provide a wealth of information on a variety of topics. There are a handful of good Internet Website directories available that can help surfers find the information they need. Most of these are bulky, though, and can take a while to thumb through.
